It is necessary to dress for woodturning. Loose clothing can easily catch on spinning wood, especially rough or burled pieces. A turner can easily be caught and hauled into the lathe. Considering that even small lathes often have half horsepower motors, this can be extremely dangerous. Neckties and jewellery are particularly to be avoided. Even rings can be caught on the spinning wood resulting in an accident called degloving wherein the bone is left on the finger and the skin and muscles are removed. A small turned box near the lathe for rings and other jewellery is a good reminder of safety first.
Clothing that is tight at the cuffs and neck prevents annoying and distracting shavings from becoming an irritant against the skin. Face masks and goggles prevent flying wood from doing damage to the face and eyes while dust masks can prevent damage to the lungs.
Many turners forget the dangers of chemicals in finishes. Latex or vinyl gloves help prevent contact problems and a good chemical mask can prevent lung damage. Even better is the use of finishes that are safe for breathing and contact.

However, there are small obstacles that can prevent you from lifting out the panel.
Many sliding windows have rollers on the top as well as the bottom. The top rollers don't actually do anything, they are there more as spares to replace the bottom rollers when they wear out. But many times the window installer will adjust these top rollers to prevent anyone from lifting out the panel. If this is the case with your windows, there will be a screw at the top of each side rail. If you loosen these screws, then lift up on the panel, it should come out. Another obstacle involves a little piece of rubber that the manufacturer places in the top track. This rubber piece has the same effect as adjusting the top rollers. It prevents you from lifting out the panel because it's wedged between the top of the window panel and the top of the upper track. If you can see that the window panel isn't lifting all the way up in the top track, and the top rollers are not the reason, then you have to dig out that rubber piece. It's usually at the point in the center, where the sliding panel and fixed panel overlap when the window is closed. Reach in there with a long, thin screwdriver, and try to pry it out.
Once you have the slider out, take out the screen. You can just pull it out. No need to be gentle since you're throwing it away anyway. The last step is the fixed panel removal. There are a few different applications here. All of them will have a center vertical bar. It's usually there to accept the locking mechanism on the slider, but not always. Look for screws holding this center bar in place. They will either be on the outside top and bottom, or you might find them on the side channel where the screen would go. Check the top and bottom corners.
Assuming you found the screws and removed them, you now need to take the center bar off. Take a screw driver and a hammer and tap the center bar at the very bottom. Tap it off the fixed panel frame. Now, pull the fixed panel away from the side where it rests in the side channel. What you are trying to do is slide the fixed panel open the same way that you did the sliding panel. Then, you can lift the fixed panel up and out. Sometimes, the fixed panel won't want to slide open because it has gotten stuck in the side track. You can put a screw driver into the side channel and pry the fixed panel away from the side. It doesn't matter if you bend the frame that's still attached to the house, because we are going to hide all of that anyway.
Now, let's go back to the vertical center bar and assume you didn't find any screws to remove it. That means the fixed piece of glass doesn't have a frame around it. It's glazed in with either silicone, caulk, or double foam tape. You have to take out the glass, then cut the center bar out using a reciprocating saw. Usually, there will be "stops" on the outside to help keep the fixed piece of glass in place. There will be 4 of them, one on top, bottom, and each side. You should be able to just pry them out with a screw driver. Then, you can go inside and cut away the adhesive holding the glass in the frame. Use a utility knife and cut between the glass and frame. Wear Plastic Gloves, and be careful not to put your hand through the glass. Put a sheet or tarp outside and let the glass fall into it. You could also have a helper stand on a ladder above the glass and try grabbing the top edge as you cut it away from the frame. Have your helper also wear Plastic Gloves. The reason for the ladder is that you want to be above the glass in case it has a little crack that you can't see. As soon as you grab the glass, the crack will run across to the opposite edge, and suddenly you will find yourself trying to hold multiple pieces of glass at the same time. Being on the ladder, if the glass "runs", you let go. After the glass is out, cut the bottom portion of the center bar flush with the bottom track. Then, you can wiggle the bar back and forth to break the top screw free. You can apply this removal process to picture windows that have no sliding panel. Just treat it like you did the fixed portion, without having to remove a center bar.

Removing Your Old Wood Double Hung Windows
The vast majority of wood sash double hung windows in America have the same specifications. Starting from inside the house and working out, you have a wood stop approximately 3/8" X 3/8". Then comes the lower sash (the sash is the piece of glass and surrounding wood frame). Then you have another wood stop (called a parting bead) between the lower sash and upper sash. This stop is approx. 1/4" X 1/2". Then you have the upper sash, and finally, the outside wood stop (called a blind stop) that is approx. 1/2" X 3/4".
Before beginning, be sure to wear safety glasses and Plastic Gloves. The safety glasses will protect your eyes from debris, and the Plastic Gloves help avoid splinters. The inside stop needs to be removed first. Try not to damage these,they will be re-installed after the replacement windows are put in. If you should happen to crack the old stops, you can take a piece to a hardware store or molding store to get replacement wood stops. If the stops have been painted to blend into the surrounding trim or wall, you need to put a flat screwdriver or putty knife into the indented area that separates the stop from the surrounding area. Drag the blade from top to bottom to chip away the paint. Then put a stiff blade putty knife into this seam and pry the stop away from the frame. Start in the middle of the stop where there is the most flexibility. Work the putty knife from the middle to the top, then from the middle to the bottom. The number of nails that were used to install the stop will determine how difficult removal will be. I have seen some stops that have just 3 nails, while others have had 6. Most of the time there will be stops around all four sides of the opening, but I have seen some openings that didn't have a top stop, and others that had no bottom stop.
After the inside stops have been removed, you should be able to pull the lower sash out. If the windows were painted shut at some time, you might have to pry the area where the lock is located to separate the sashes. Now, once you get the lower sash out, it will still be attached to the cords that hold the window up when you raise it. Take a pair of tin snips and cut the cords while maintaining tension on them. The cords will recoil back into the assemblies. Take the lower sash and set it aside.
Next,we need to remove the middle stop, or parting bead. This piece is going to be thrown away, so you don't have to be careful when removing this piece. The parting bead will be on top and along both sides. It's never on the bottom. Take a screwdriver and tap it into the groove between the side frame and parting bead. Pry out. The bead is nailed into a recessed groove. When all of the parting bead is out, the upper sash will come out. If it's painted to the outside stop, CAREFULLY pry the sash from the outside stop with a stiff putty knife. You want to avoid damaging the outside stop. Remove the upper sash the same way you did the lower sash, cutting the cords under tension.
At this point,you should have the inside stops removed and set aside to be installed later, both sashes removed, the middle stop or parting bead removed and discarded,and the outside blind stop left in place undisturbed. Check to make sure there are no obstructions in the opening such as nails,the metal tab at the bottom for holding in the old screen, etc. The final step is to take a stiff putty knife and scrape the inside face of the outside blind stops to get rid of any old caulking. This is the surface that the replacement windows are going to rest against, and we are going to want this area as smooth as possible. Clean up all loose debris from the opening, and you are now ready to install your replacement windows. That will be our topic for next weeks article...

The trademarked PolyStone construction gives the tile a flexible, lightweight and durable surface suitable for interior floors. The tiles install on wood and concrete floor constructions, as well as over formerly applied vinyl flooring. Using Cryntel tiles on a bathroom floor consists of a preparation and installation procedure to produce the effective tile adhesion necessary for a bathroom environment.
Instructions

Place tiles along the chalk lines to ensure that at least half a tile will install at the wall edges.
5. Spread Millennium tile adhesive onto the subfloor at a rate of 100 to 125 square feet per 1/2 gallon of adhesive, using a 1/32-inch-by-1/16-inch-by-1/32-inch U-notched trowel. Use the chalk lines as a guide to applying the adhesive. Wait until the adhesive surface is tacky to the touch and a clear color.
6. Line up a tile to the chalk line adhesive edge. Present the tile at an acute angle to the adhesive surface and press the tile down. Install the tiles in lines with the tile edges abutting in order to reduce installation time and grouting.
7. Cut tiles to fit around curved objects, such as the toilet and sink, by scoring the tile surface with a utility knife and using a coping saw to cut out the shape required. Cut a tile that requires a straight cut by scoring the surface with a utility knife and snapping the tile along the scored line.
8. Use a steel three-section 100-lb. roller to firmly press the tiles into the adhesive within one hour of installation. Move the roller diagonally across the tiles. Use a hand-held three-section seam roller to press down along the edges of each tile.
9. Remove any adhesive from the tile surface using a cloth dampened with mineral spirits. Apply a thin line of premixed PolyStone grout in between the tile joints to complete the bathroom floor. Allow the grout to cure for five hours before walking on the flooring.

Other professions that have unique outfits or jobs to describe can include a doctor, mechanic, zookeeper, librarian, grocery clerk, policeman, fire-fighter, and scientist.
2) NEW KID IN CLASS: Have your daughter pick out five ponies for a classroom and one pony to be the new kid in class. The new kid comes in to introduce herself and each of the "classmates" introduced themselves by name and gives the month of their birthday, favorite color and their favorite subject in school. The new kid then has to recite this information back to acknowledge each of her classmates. When the child gets stumped, the parent can chime in with a reminder.
3) COOKING SHOW CLAMMER: Have your daughter pick out five ponies for an audience and one pony for the chef. You are going to play out a cooking show theme, which will include each of the ponies requesting a special recipe to be made by the "chef". As the chef begins to put together the dish, the ponies all yell out what ingredients she must use and how to cook the specific food. For example, Chocolate Chip Cookies would need flour, butter, eggs, salt, chips, and sugar. Now mix into a mixing bowl. Spoon onto a cookie sheet and bake in the oven. Other examples that have simple ingredients for girls to call out can be chocolate cake, omelet, pizza, spaghetti, and hamburgers with all the fixings.
4) DISNEY THEATRE: Have your daughter pick out a Disney classic movie she enjoys or has recently seen to become the stage play for the ponies. Some ideas include Aladdin, Snow White, Cinderella, 101-Dalmations. Then pick out appropriate number of ponies to become the actors. Together you will act out the scenes to the movie and talk about which scene you each remember. This can be very imaginative as you each take on the Disney character acting through the pony. If you have soundtracks to a particular movie, it is fun to act out the play in musical style, having the ponies move while you both sing along.
5) ZOO IN THE HOUSE: You and your daughter will create a zoo using each of the ponies as a particular animal. As the zookeeper, you will go from pony to pony while your child gives you a hint as to what animal the pony is portraying. This can be done by making the animal's sound, or by expressing what the animal would like to eat. For example, the pony that pretending to be a monkey, can ask the zookeeper for some bananas. The zookeeper guesses right and feeds the monkey other things this animal would enjoy then moves on to the next "zoo animal".
